This photo of Bryant Temple A.M.E. Church, located at 2525 W. Vernon Ave. shows a two-story, cream-color building with several windows all around it. The main entrance consists of two double doors with ornate black wrought iron and a large window above. A brown banner can be seen hanging along the right side of the building, and another smaller sign peeks out from between two neatly trimmed shrubs. Residential homes are visible behind the church. Verso on photograph states that this church was formerly known as Sephardic Brotherhood Temple (Jewish), possibly dating as far back as the 1950s. The African Methodist Episcopal Church was the first African-American organized and incorporated denomination in the U.S. The church, born in protest against slavery and against dehumanization of African people that were brought to the American continent as free labor, has been one of the forerunners of education within the African-American Community. The A.M.E. church estimates approximately 5,000,000 members worldwide, 9,000 ministers, and 7,000 congregations in more than 30 nations. Photo dated: April 2004.
