Describing the year 1868, when W. E. B. Du Bois was born; provides a glimpse of his early years in school, and his journey at Fisk University, where Du Bois "became a man, flaming with indignation against the wrongs done his people, determine to beat back the oppressors and to cut a path through the encircling darkness." Describes his Ph. D. thesis that led to future in-depth research, his time as editor of The Crisis, his time at NAACP, his publications, and his personal life. Notes that Du Bois "may be termed the unique distinction of being the only living American who has been listed in every issue of Who's Who since it first begain publication in 1898."
