Description

The letters to Amzie Moore in this folder document his efforts to get a community center built, to meet the needs of local farmers who had been denied loans by banks interested in pushing them off their land, to meet the needs of those who had lost jobs due to their involvement with the civil rights movement, to meet the needs of local people for food and clothing, and to provide adult literacy education. The letters also indicate that he was a sought-after participant in conferences on politics, Black Power, and poverty programs. He was clearly seen as the "go-to" person for poverty issues in the Delta. In addition, this folder contains a statement of principles guiding the Mennonite Central Committee in their voluntary service in the Mississippi Delta, a form letter from Emmett Morris about trying to develop a Young Democrats Club to support the National Democratic Party's principles while keeping the MFDP from seizing "control of the organization," and letters suggesting that--sin
