Description
The Council on the Status of Women started as the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women in 1963 by Governor James Terry Sanford. The Commission was responsible for reviewing areas where women were likely to suffer from discrimination and provide recommendations that can be addressed by the State. The Commission became a permanent state agency in 1965 and was transferred to the North Carolina Department of Administration in 1975. The council reviewed problems associated with employment, education, childcare, politics, domestic violence, and sexual assault. The Executive Director's File series contains records from former Executive Directors who worked in the Council on the Status of Women. The materials include correspondence, informational pamphlets, agendas, minutes, schedules, and more.
