Description

Spear currency created by the Topoke people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.Large forged blades in the shape of a spear point were used as currency, especially during wedding ceremonies, by the Topoke people up until the mid-twentieth century. Though shaped to look like weapons, the blades were too thin to be used as such. They were often embellished with parallel lines running close to the edges.Anonymous gift to the Tubman African American Museum.
