Burns, Stewart

Description

Stewart Burns discusses the book that he co-wrote with his father, James MacGregor Burns, “A People’s Charter.” He begins by explaining several instances in history when people’s rights have not been upheld like the Red Scare during the Joe McCarthy era, Abraham Lincoln’s non-enforcement of habeas corpus, racial segregation, and violations against women. He discusses his work as the editor of a new book on Martin Luther King’s papers. Burns talks about the separation of church and state in America, and the problem with the government funding private schools. He discusses the Roe vs. Wade case and how the Constitution doesn’t state anything about a women’s right to her own body. He ends the interview by describing how the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and the amendments can be interpreted in different ways.
