Description

Black coat given by John McHie to his wife Beneta Edwards McHie as a Christmas gift in the late 1950s. Beneta McHie, a member of a prominent African American family, was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and was heavily involved in the education of women and minorities as well as a number of social justice issues. The knee-length black wool coat has a plush coating with a black satin or rayon lining. Beneta McHie regularly wore the coat to church at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Minneapolis as well as to other events. The coat carries design labels for "Lilli Ann / Paris / San Francisco" and "Blin + Blin / FABULOUS FRENCH WOOLEN / DESIGNED BY / Lilli Ann", as well as a a seller's label reading "MARNA LEE / FROCKS / Chicago & Lake Minneapolis". The coat was sold by the Marna Lee Dress Shop, owned and operated by Bill and Edith Myers and their son Donald between 1929 and 1976.
