Chaney, Richard Frost, Elias

Description

Indenture (contract) dated September 22, 1847 between Richard Chaney and Elias Frost, both of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for the Negro slave named George. The loan (debt) is in the amount of $35. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Thomas Watkins on September 21 and recorded by district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden on September 22, the document specifies that Chaney agrees to pay back the loan of $35 plus legal interest (not specified) to Frost by January 22, 1848 or forfeit the slave named George. (Editor's note: Why the date of the indenture, i.e., September 22, is later than the date the contract is certified by Justice of the Peace Watkins, i.e., September 21, is not known. Also, during this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
