Description
Photograph of the artist Alma Thomas standing before one of her distinctive abstract paintings. The large painting uses asymmetrical blocks of color to form a larger shape.A prominent abstract painter of the 1960s and 1970s, Alma Thomas was the first African American woman to have a solo art exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, in 1971. Thomas did not concentrate exclusively on making art until she was well into her sixties.
