Description

Broadside written by Jackson Millsaps of Centre, Alabama, in which he advocates a state constitutional convention. He argues that the current document is beyond revision, partly because or its origin: ". . . our present constitution was framed by our enemies, by parties who had but little interest in the welfare of our country; many of them foreigners among us, adventurers or ignorant negroes who were enfranchised and made to vote and hold office, while many thousands of good, true, country-loving white men, who had ability to make laws were disfranchised by the power of the bayonet. This class of men and a few native Alabamians who were willing to barter away our lovely South, kith and kin, joined in and made one of the most obnoxious and corrupt constitutions; one that is a shame and disgrace to humanity. . . . All this is the work of this same set of conspirators that has held the reins of government from 1868 to 1874, and we are left only one alternative, and that is to change the constitution; and we should be careful and act wisely and endeavor to so arrange it that it may be good for all, and do no injury to any one whatever."
