Description

In 1888 this was the scene along Grand Avenue, as cyclists peddled in front of the new Grand Avenue Congregational Church UCC, and the Gaves residence west of the church. The church was organized on Feb. 10, 1847, as the Free Congregational Church. The congregation put itself emphatically on record as opposed to slavery and sent resolutions to President Lincoln. When the church moved to the southwest corner of the avenue (then Spring Street) and Sixth Street, the name was changed to Spring Street Congregational Church. In 1887 the present building at 2133 W. Wisconsin Ave. was constructed, and the name was changed once again, this time to Grand Avenue Congregational Church. Membership stood at 1,400. The architect for the building was the noted Edward Townsend Mix. The congregation is planning a series of special worship services and musical concerts during 1987 to celebrate its centennial year.
