Description

This is a folder of documents on community centers during Freedom Summer and after. A document on "COFO's Proposed Community Centers" lays out the goals for the centers during Freedom Summer, the economic and social factors behind their inception, plans for volunteers and programs, and descriptions of the two community centers already in operation in Greenwood and Meridian. The first page of the familiar COFO memo to 1964 Summer Project staff, "An Overview of Community Centers," is also here, followed by a more sober assessment of community centers from later in the summer called "Progress and Problems of the COFO Community Centers." A form letter from Annell Ponder asks local people for their input on what programs they'd like to see in a community center and for help in staffing it.
