The city council discusses plans to revitalize the area around Martin Luther King Boulevard, including residential and commercial development and modernizing infrastructure. City alderman David Jones speaks about the historic importance of the area to Savannah's black community and his memories growing up there. Mayor Floyd Adams, Jr. praises the planned projects, but says that the timeline is too slow and he wants to begin and complete projects more quickly. Pamela Jones, committee tri-chairperson, talks about how the primary goal of the project should be to revitalize businesses that have left the area so the community can shop close to their homes. Committee coordinator Lynette Williams speaks about how community support and involvement is essential in successfully reaching the project's goals of economic revitalization. Segment two: Groundbreaking of Marriott Courtyard hotel, 9:05-13:02. Mayor Floyd Adams, Jr., city officials, and hotel executives break ground on a new Marriott Courtyard hotel to be built on Liberty Street in the Martin Luther King corridor, part of the city's effort to bring economic activity to that area. John McKibbon, chairman of McKibbon Hotel Inc. who will operate the new hotel, speaks about the opportunity to bring a new hotel to downtown Savannah. Mayor Floyd Adams, Jr. gives a speech about how important the hotel will be for city and his gratitude to the McKibbon group for bringing their development to Savannah.
