Description

This series of WSB newsfilm clips from Athens, Georgia on January 9, 1961, shows scenes of the University of Georgia's first two African American students, Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes, arriving on campus to register for classes and the response from some white students. The clip opens with white students' chanting, "Two, four, six, eight, we don't want to integrate." Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter are seen separately sitting in classroom. The view shifts to show white students standing outdoors. The chanting students are seen next. The clip breaks, and Holmes and Hunter are then shown sitting on a sofa together. A car carrying the two students is seen driving through campus. The narrator describes how Holmes and Hunter were treated poorly by white students after starting classes. Scenes of Holmes and Hunter on campus follow this. An unidentified reporter asks Hunter if she feels intimidated, and she replies that she does not. The narrator finishes by stating that Holmes and Hunter both graduated from the University of Georgia in 1963.
