@ Memphis Public Library

Description

“Ella Fitzgerald, famed jazz singer who performed as a teen-ager at the old Church Park Auditorium on Beale Street, will be guest star at the pops concert of Memphis Symphony Orchestra next Feb. 24 in Dixon-Myers Hall at the Auditorium. -- Miss Fitzgerald, a headliner for most of her 58 years, will sing with the orchestra under direction of Vincent de Frank. -- The singer’s career began when she won a $10 prize in an amateur show at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Her appearance is made possible through a grant from the Memphis Arts Council jazz artists in residence program, according to Walter Hehmeyer, general manager of the Orchestral Society.”
