Description
Wood, who was the first African American to run for office in Prattville, ran unsuccessful campaigns for coroner (in 1966) and city council (three times). In 1988 his son, Willie Lee Wood, Jr., became the first African American to hold public office in the city when he was elected to the city council; he served for 28 years, longer than any other elected official in Prattville history. This photograph appeared on page 1 of The Southern Courier for April 30-May 1, 1966.
