Description
Records collected by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission relating to the monthly meeting held in January 1964. The file contains copies of a resolution commenting Governor Ross Barnett and lieutenant governor Paul Johnson for their time on the committee; financial reports for the commission and for the Coordinating Committee for Fundamental American Freedoms; and a copy of a pamphlet of Governor Barnett's testimony against proposed Civil Rights legislation given before the Senate Commerce Committee. The file also contains a report of the commission's recent activity, outlining ongoing investigations to update county files; work to end or minimize the impact of boycotts in Canton and Hattiesburg; a proposal to retain the services of John Satterfield and the Coordinating Committee for Fundamental American Freedoms to fight proposed Civil Rights legislation through February; and information on the resolution of a school issue in Jasper County.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
