Description

This is a bill of sale from Henry Ward to Otis Baker for a slave boy named Cato, 6 December 1763. Over thirteen years later Baker manumitted Cato: on the verso is a certificate for the discharge and freedom of the former slave, 4 June 1777, signed by Otis Baker and witnessed by Jeremy Belknap, the founder of the Massachusetts Historical Society. From the Jeremy Belknap papers Page 2 is a document giving Cato freedom, signed by Otis Baker and witnessed by Jeremy Belknap, 4 June 1777.
