Railroads constructed and proposed are indicated.Work on the Dismal Swamp Canal began in 1793, primarly by slaves. It was completed in 1805 and is the oldest continually operated canal in the United States. Constructed to connect Chesapeake Bay with the sounds of the Outer Banks, it was vital to trade between the two states and the economy of the Virginia Tidewater.
