Description
Walter Fine of Crawford County, Arkansas, swore a loyalty oath to the United States on October 20, 1865. Sam F. Cooper was the clerk for the U.S. District Court, and R.F. Naylor was the deputy clerk. The oath emphasizes that those swearing it respect the recent emancipation of slaves. 2 Amnesty Oath under Presidents Proclamation of May 29th 1865 I Walter Fine of Crawford County and State of Arkansas Do Solemnly Swear in the presence of Almighty God that I will henceforth faithfully Support protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States thereunder and that I will manner abide by and faithfully Support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the Existing rebellion with reference to the Emancipa- tion of Slaves - So help me God Walter Fine [seal] Sworn to & Subscribed before me at Van Buren this 20th day of October A.D. 1865 Sam F.
