Description

A portrait photograph of Katherine Polk Gale (1838-1916), the author of "Recollections of Life in the Southern Confederacy, 1861-1865." Katherine was a daughter of Episcopalian Bishop Leonidas Polk, a Confederate general in the American Civil War and a second cousin of President James K. Polk. She was the wife of William Dudley Gale, a staff officer in the Confederate Army. Mrs. Katherine Polk Gale was very active in Christ Church Cathedral, Nashville. She was a leader in the work of the Woman's Auxiliary and at one time the Diocesan President. 1 photograph : sepia ; 5 x 7 in.
