Description

Photograph taken about 1940 of the interior of the Enoch Pratt Free Library Branch number 11 at number 6 South Central Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland. Funded by the Maccabeans, a Jewish philanthropic group concerned about the numerous immigrants living in this area of East Baltimore, a library "station" was opened in 1904 in a rented room in Maccabean House, a settlement house in East Baltimore. By 1921 number 11 was so successful it received its own building. In this picture, two librarians at the circulation desk (center) are assisting patrons to check out books. Patrons of all ages and races are scattered about the room, sitting at tables (center, by shelves), searching the bookshelves (left), or looking up information in the card catalog (left center). On the right is an announcement for a recently released book entitled "The Fifth Column Is Here" by George Britt. Closed in 1960, the building later saw use as a school and then as a pipe organ repair shop, but then it languished until 1999, when it was bought and refurbished as a private residence.
