Description

Engraved vignetted carte-de-visite of John Brown, who led a raid on the U.S. Arsenal on October 16, 1859, at Harper's Ferry in the hopes of capturing weapons there and going on to destroy the slave system in the South. Brown and some of his raiders were captured by Federal forces and convicted of treason. His actions served to inflame the dispute between the abolitionist and pro-slavery factions and harden the lines that separated the North and the South.
