Description
A donation letter from William Greaves, clerk for Samuel D. Hastings, from various individuals pledging support for the Amistad Captives. In this letter, Greaves explains that "a coloured man of the name of ‘Freeman’ called this morning relative to the proceeds from the sale of the Amistad and cargo.” He says that he was a steward on board the U.S. vessel, which captured the Amistad, and thinks he is entitled to some portion of the salvage awarded. Greaves then asks the recipient, Lewis Tappan to communicate any knowledge he has on this topic to Hastings.
