This video was produced by Elon Local News (ELN) in 2014. The School of Communications students produced this hour documentary in honor of ELON’s 125th anniversary. This documentary reflected upon the founding of Elon College in the nineteenth century with the Southern Christian Church as the foundation, which transformed Elon University in the twenty-first century with respect to all faiths. Elon topics included: the opening of Elon College in 1889; the first graduating female in 1892; the welcoming of the first intercollegiate baseball team in 1900; the bringing of heat, running water, and electricity in 1905; the reducing of Elon’s class size due to World War I in 1918; the 1923 fire destroying of Main Building; the developing of the 100 year plan in 1923 after the fire; the reviving of Elon by working with the U.S. government in the creation of the Army Air Forces; exceeding enrollment by 1,000 in 1955; the graduation of Eugene Perry in 1969 (the first African-American student); the creating of the Study Abroad program to England; the transferring Elon College to Elon University in 2000; and the arrival of a new mascot, the Phoenix.
