Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. Above the salutation, the number "112" is written in pencil, while on the verso, along the spine edge, "MS A.1.2. 31.149" and "T.T. N.Y., Sept. 24, 1862." are also both written in pencil, vertically.Theodore Tilton writes to William Lloyd Garrison thanking him "for the picture, the best I have seen" and remarking, "Well, the Proclamation at last!" in reference to President Lincoln's preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, announced just two days earlier. Tilton expresses the "bewilderment of joy" he has felt and comments on the language of the proclamation, before telling Garrison, "I would like to have seen whether you laughed or cried on reading it: I did both."
