Photograph of John Lewis leading around 600 civil rights activists across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama toward Montgomery, Alabama On March 7, 1965. Police officers stand in the foreground. The marchers were beaten by Alabama state troopers in an incident that came to be known as "Bloody Sunday." More than twenty years later, Lewis was elected to the U.S. Congress as a representative from Georgia.
