Description
This folder includes a couple of poignant affidavits by local people, including one from a man who lost his job when a policeman who had seen him trying to register to vote reported him to his employer, and a northern minister who were arrested on charges of obstructing a sidewalk while trying to register to vote in March and April 1964. Various motions and petitions regarding City of Hattiesburg v. Michael Lefton et al, many of them having to with Judge Cox's 1963 rule that out-of-state attorneys had to be joined in court by local attorneys who shared their views. The out-of-state lawyers declared that Judge Cox's rule did not accord with other legal practices and that local pro-civil rights lawyers were impossible to find in Mississippi. A letter from William Kunstler objecting to Judge Cox's 1963 rule is among these materials.
