Description

E.A. Markham, a British poet and author, begins by discussing traveling to Iowa to get ideas about shaping the writing program at the school where he teaches in England. He also talks about editing an anthology of Asian Ugandan writing during Idi Amin's reign in which Peter Nazareth's work appears. He then reads a poem called “A Death in the Family” from a collection called “Misapprehensions.” He discusses Caribbean short fiction and his connection to his birthplace in Montserrat. Finally, Markham discusses the two personas he wrote in for short times in the 70's: Paul St. Vincent, a young Caribbean man and Sally Goodman, a white Welsh woman. Peter Nazareth, a native of Uganda, is a Professor of English and African-American World Studies at the University of Iowa. Since 1974, he has been advisor to the University's International Writing Program, which brings writers from around the world to the University of Iowa for semester-long residencies. Over the span of more than thirty years, Nazareth has recorded interviews, seminars, and panel discussions with IWP writers conducted in various settings, including "Humanities at Iowa", a 1980s radio show that aired on WSUI/KSUI.
