Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Legacy catalog card identifies the place of publication of this manuscript as "Boston."Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on blue paper. Above the salutation, the number "3" is written in pencil, while along the fore edge, "1854(?" is also written in pencil. Under the signature, "(A colored lawyer)" has been added in pencil. Opposite the first page of the letter, Rock has addressed the letter to "Wm Lloyd Garrison Esq," which is written upside-down, and below this information there is a large brown spot.John S. Rock writes to William Lloyd Garrison as he is about to leave for England and says "Mr. [Wendell] Phillips who has just told me to ask you to give me a letter to Mrs. Stowe (I will call up to A____ and see her)." Rock describes how he "failed to get a passport or anything from the government" and so is "compelled to go by way of England."
