Handwritten copy of letter; not William Lloyd Garrison's handwriting. Whereabouts of original manuscript unknown.William Lloyd Garrison thanks Oliver Johnson for the gift of a daguerreotype of Johnson. Garrison mediates on Johnson's appearance in the image and the changes due to growing older. Garrison emphasizes the "brotherly feeling" between himself and Johnson. Garrison has returned from a vacation tour with his family that lasted nearly three weeks in the New Hampshire mountains. Touring with a large family is an "expensive luxury." The election of Abraham Lincoln seems probable. Garrison comments about Lincoln: "He will do nothing to offend the South."Merrill, Walter M. Letters of William Lloyd Garrison, v.4, no.308.
