Description

Contracts between William H. Worthington and Wesley Linthicum et al., with several slaves used as collateral to insure Worthington against loss as clerk of the court. Pages 1-4: Bill of sale dated May 31, 1850 for property including Negro slaves named Aimey, Caroline, Charles, Charlotte, Gustavus, Henny, John, Martha, Richard, and Susan sold by William H. Worthington of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland to Wesley Linthicum, Samuel R. Powell, Thomas J. White, and Seth W. Warfield of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County and Tristram S. Dorsey of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $5. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Nathan Shipley and recorded by district clerk W. H. (William H.) Worthington among the chattel records in liber E. P. H. number 2 folio 291 on September 10, 1850, the bill of sale gives the age of each slave sold: Henny age about 30 years; Caroline age about 25 years, Susan age about 16 years, Aimey age about 16 years, Gustavus age about 14 years, Charles age about 12 years, Charlotte age about 8 years, Richard age about 4 years, Martha age about 3 years, and John age about 1 year. Pages 5-8: Indenture (contract) of mortgage release dated September 23, 1854 from Wesley Linthicum, Seth W. Warfield, Thomas J. White, and Samuel R. Powell Howard County and Tristam S. Dorsey of Anne Arundel County to William H. Worthington of Howard County for property including Negro slaves named Aimey, Caroline,...
