Description
Deed of manumission dated May 31, 1860 by Mathew Coates for his Negro slave named Anna Coates. Witnessed by J. T. B. Dorsey, George W. Sands, and Justice of the Peace Edw. (Edward) Harwood and recorded by Howard County clerk W. W. Watkins, the document identifies Anna Coates as a bright mulatto woman age 18 years and 5 feet 5 inches in height, whose manumission is to commence immediately. (Editor's note: What relationship, if any, existed beyond that of owner and slave is not indicated in the document. Blank pages 2 and 3 were not scanned and thus are not included.)
