Description
Jacob Needleman discusses his book, “American Souls.” He begins by explaining the unique elements of the American Constitution including the separation of church and state, and the spirituality of the founders. Martinson asks Needleman to read a passage from the book about his love for America. He talks about George Washington’s decision to step down after his term was over and how it set the precedent for future leaders. Needleman discusses Benjamin Franklin’s role in the writing of the Constitution and his emphasis on religion. He talks about the struggles that Abraham Lincoln faced when trying to free slaves while being a slave owner himself. Needleman ends the interview by talking about Frederick Douglass and the destruction of Native American culture by settlers.
