Description

This payroll acknowledges that Captain Charles H. Dimmock, Engineer Corps, paid certain Chesterfield County, Virginia, slave owners for work performed by their slaves at the defenses of Petersburg, Virginia, during August 1862. Slave owner Elizabeth Dudley provided a slave named Cornelius. Slave owner Mary Dunn provided slaves named Israel, Jordan, Peter, Andrew, and Henry. Slave owner Charles W. Friend provided slaves named Tom, Richard, Harry, Milton, Nelson, Bob, and Willis. Slave owner Thomas Fenley provided slaves named Henderson and Henry. Slave owner William T. Gregory provided slaves named Wilson and Creed. Slave owner O. Hamilton provided a slave named Dick. William T. Gregory acknowledged receipt of payment for himself. George W. Friend acknowledged receipt of payment for Charles W. Friend, whose August 22, 1863, power of attorney was witnessed by Daniel H. Flournoy and E. D. Archer. The other owners were not paid from this payroll. Certain information on this payroll was crossed out at or around the time the payroll was created. Specifically, information concerning slave owner John Bradley and his slave, Francis, and slave owner Patrick Cholky and his slave, Jim, were crossed out.
