The report gives the date, name, and reason for whipping for each convict included.John Spivak was granted access to official whipping reports while conducting research for his 1932 novel Georgia Nigger, a thinly fictionalized condemnation of Georgia's penal system that unveiled the harsh working conditions and brutal treatment suffered by African Americans in the state's convict camps.
