Description

This payroll acknowledges that John B. Stanard, 1st Lieutenant, Engineers, P. A. C.S., paid certain Halifax County, Virginia, slave owners for work performed by their slaves at Chaffin's Bluff and Brook Depot, Virginia, from November 1862 to January 1863. Slave owner W. T. Fourquecan [sic] provided a slave named Sam. Slave owner Giles N. Crowder provided a slave named Sam. Slave owner Nelson K. Foster provided a slave named Joe. Slave owner Percy Tuck provided a slave named Joshua. Slave owner Paul Tuck provided a slave named Jim. Slave owner Matilda Hite provided a slave named Riley. Slave owner Catharine Carr provided a slave named Jacob. Slave owner John W. Lacy provided a slave named Jack. Slave owner John L. Lovelace provided a slave named Moses. Slave owner Giles Sydnor provided a slave named Cread. Slave owner Moses G. Hendrick provided slaves named Daniel and Emanuel. Slave owner Judith B. Hendrick provided a slave named Alfred. Slave owner Alexander L. Peters provided a slave named Judge. Slave owner Peyton Bradshaw provided a slave named Spencer. The estate of slave owner Gabriel Tucker provided slaves named Phil and Patrick. Slave owner James B. Coates provided a slave named William. Slave owner Giles Martin provided a slave named Bob.
