Description

A color-coded map made as an exhibit for an East Tennessee Supreme Court case (ET 1185). Shows properties, "business houses" and saloons owned by defendant Irene Friedman and other groups (including "property occupied by Negros") in the "red light district" of Chattanooga. Shows Read House, nearby black businesses, Fire Hall No. 1, and area from 8th to 11th Streets and Carter and Chestnut Streets. From Hamilton County Chancery Court case of M. G. Weidener, et.al. vs. Irene Friedman, et.al. in 1911.Exhibit A from East Tennessee Supreme Court case M. G. Weidner, et al, v. Irene Friedman, et al, Oct. 14, 1911. Originally part of James McMahon's deposition in which he describes how over the years Helen St. has become the start of the "red light district."
