Description

Title devised by cataloger. At the end of page two, a typed not reads, "[End of leaf one --- the remainder is missing. A. Tappan]"In this typed copy of a letter to William Lloyd Garrison, Arthur Tappan acknowledges the receipt of Garrison's last letter and says that Garrison's explanation about copies of the Liberator appearing in Charleston, South Carolina with Tappan's name written on them "is entirely satisfactory". He also states that newspapers in North Carolina report that Garrison and his partner, Isaac Knapp, have been indicted "for distributing incendiary papers in this state." Tappan says he does not know the "importance to attach to this" but offers him money if it will "save you from the fangs of these wretches". He then mentions that Simeon Jocelyn is with him and is "preparing a pamphlet" about the college for free African-American men, which "will probably be located in N[ew] J[ersey] on this side, but this is yet undecided." Tappan praises Garrison's letter to the editor of the National Intelligencer and tells him how his home in New Haven was "rudely assailed by some vile fellows ... [it is] conjectured that they were southern medical students."
