Description

In the letter Howard explains why the shoes Hall ordered have not been delivered yet: "Our workman which filled all orders for fine work was contrary to a contract made with his owner taken from us before the expiration of the term for which we hired and consequently many of our orders were forced to be delayed." He then discusses political matters, arguing that peace with great compromise would not resolve the issues that led to the war: "I dread the influence that verry [sic] favorable propositions for peace from the conservative party of the north upon the basis of reconstruction might have upon us, I fear that such divissions [sic] thereby might be produced among us as will bring about a union with free states that would in the course of time produce the same results that are now afflicting us."
