Description

Letter from Charlotte Cowles in Farmington, Connecticut, to her brother Samuel Cowles in Hartford, Connecticut. Charlotte asked Samuel to purchase a copy of the book "Slavery As It Is" [by Theodore Weld] for Mrs. Lawrence. Margaret Cowles, just recently arrived in town, had been regaling friends and family with stories of happy slaves and kind masters which Mrs. Lawrence wanted to refute. Charlotte acknowledged that she had read the book and was appalled at the cruelty shown to enslaved people. She promised to work on Samuel's collars this week.
