Many of the documents in this folder pertain to 1965 plans to build a brick factory in Mississippi, in part with War on Poverty funds, in order to train local people--who had been evicted from plantations--to build homes, thus developing job skills, providing employment, and establishing better housing in one fell swoop. A Mississippi Development Foundation was proposed to handle this project. The project was especially designed for Tribbett, Mississippi, ("Strike City") where evicted, striking agricultural workers were living on an abandoned military base in tents through the winter. Housing plans were derailed by the fact that white butane gas distributors refused to provide heating gas to the African American Tent City residents. When the brick factory/housing project failed to get off the ground, Frank and Jean Smith arranged to get the distributorship of Fuller cosmetics, sold door to door by Tent City residents.
