Description
Reverse reads: "Richard Toler, 515 Poplar Street, Cincinnati, Ohio, was born in slavery on Henry Toler's plantation in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia, approximately 100 years ago. Toler remembers voting for General Grant. Although he never enlisted in the Civil War, he was close to the battle front and saw such famous men as General Lee, Grant, Lincoln, and John Brown. After the war, Toler moved to Cincinnati where he has made his residence ever since. Although old in years Toler is very active, He does most of the work around the house; chops wood every day "just to keep limbered up," he says.
