Collected by Irene Carlisle Transcribed by Nathaniel Lucy Sung by Doney Hammontree Farmington, Arkansas May 15, 1951 Reel 113, Item 4 Battle of Bull Run In eighteen hundred and sixty-one Way down in ole Virginy McDowell mustered young and old Horse thieves and villians many There were Tories there and dirty Dutch Hessians and Yankees bloody With the regular troops from Tennessee United in a body To crush the rebels was their plan And then march on to Richmond And handcuff every one of them As fast as they could catch him But never was a ditch they dug More ready for the diggers Nor did they by their false humbug Succeed in stealin’ niggers Then General Scott from Chesterville Delivered his dispatches And Beauregard on the battlefield Cried “Boys, pull down you hatchets” Then down they went of German Gulf And stopped their blood and thunder While Kirby with his Southern boys Put all their men asunder And then the race for life begun The Yankees seen us comin’ And ev’ry vigil man displayed His skill a-runnun’ The ladies who came out to see The rebel host defeated Was them themselves compelled to flee And all their men retreatedThey lost, poor souls, their crinolines And all their ball equipage Was scattered o’er the battle line Like common soldier’s baggage They left upon the battleground Their wounded sick and dyin’ They never turned their face around So swiftly was they flyin’ Their ammunition, stores, and guns Provision, mess, and horses...
