Council of Federated Organizations

Description

The correct title of this document appears to be "What Is COFO?" Its other, more accurate, title is: "Mississippi: Structure of the Movement, Present Operations, and Prospectus for This Summer." Undated, but clearly written in the spring of 1964, this seminal document lays out COFO's plans for Freedom Summer voter registration efforts, freedom schools, and the "Freedom Vote" as an alternative to the official national presidential election from which black Mississippians were sure to be excluded, along with broader recognition of the incredible poverty in which black Mississippi residents lived. It also discusses COFO's history and finances. This is the foremost document for COFO's history and Freedom Summer plans and is included in several other folders.
