Description

Records collected by the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission on Buford Posey between 1958 and 1970. Posey was alleged to be a member of the communist party. The file contains a recounting of Posey allegedly promoting the communist party in 1948, articles written by Posey and published in the New Southerner and the American Socialist publications, information about his arrest in 1958 for challenging a newspaper publisher to dual for reprinting comments from those articles, reports from investigations in 1961 and 1963, as well as a copy of the broadside published by the Georgia Commission on Education following the 1957 documenting the Highlander Folk School's twenty-fifth anniversary celebration and the alleged communist connection to the school as well as the social integration during the weekend.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
