Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on blue paper. Above the salutation, a checkmark is drawn next to the number "20", both in pencil, while in the head- fore corner, there is a purple, oval stamp containing the words, "Garrison MSS."Martin Stowell writes to William Lloyd Garrison to share "a fact or two which may be of some use to some friend of humanity and which may serve to show the hollow hearted hypocracy [sic] of some of the leading men in the Nation." Stowell discusses his background to Garrison and describes a pastor who encouraged him to join the Navy, which led to his service on the ship, Decatur, working to prevent the transatlantic slave trade. He details an encounter with a slave ship, including its boarding and dismissal by the captain, "to the astonishment and disappointment of nearly if not quite all on board." Stowell takes the incident as proof that "every manner of villany [sic] [is] carried on by those from whom we are taught by our hypocritical Priests to respect and obey." He encloses two dollars (not included) for a Liberator subscription for another resident in Warren and signs the letter, "Yours for the exposure of hypocracy [sic]".
