Description

Fifth Avenue High School, located at 1800 Fifth Avenue, was originally built by architect Edward Stotz in 1895. The school cost a total of $243,000 to construct and furnish. The western half of the first floor was utilized by the Board of Education and housed their executive offices. The eastern half contained training facilities for new teachers. An annex building containing an auditorium, two gymnasiums, and a swimming pool was added to the structure in 1926. In 1928 the school became a junior-senior high school. It remained in use until 1976, when the property was sold to the City of Pittsburgh and the students were transferred to Brashear.
