Anderson, Thomas Herbert, Thomas S

Description

Indenture (contract) of mortgage release dated July 2, 1849 from Thomas Anderson to Thomas S. Herbert, both residents of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for property including several slaves. The loan (debt) is in the amount of $1200. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Thomas Gibbons on July 2 and recorded by district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden on July 17, the document indicates that Anderson officially releases Herbert from the debt ($1200 plus interest from December 12, 1846, as recorded in chattel records liber J. L. M. page 423 dated December 20, 1846), which he repaid in full. Among the possessions Herbert gave for the money were several of his slaves whose names are noted in the document: Becky with her sons Rezin, Daniel, Oliver, and Jim and her daughter Fanny; Henny; and Amos, son of Nelly. With fulfillment of his debt the slaves are returned to Herbert. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
