Description

Garrett Morgan with his medal for bravery, presented by the city of Cleveland in recognition of his rescue of several men from a tunnel explosion in 1916. Cleveland inventor and businessman Garrett Augustus Morgan (1877-1963) invented the gas mask and the traffic light. He moved to Cleveland in 1895. In 1908 he helped found the Cleveland Association of Colored Men. He was also a founder, in 1920, of the weekly newspaper Cleveland Call, forerunner of the Call and Post.
